The choice between a rapid review vs systematic review, or either against a scoping review, comes down to three factors: how well-defined your question is, how much time you have, and how much evidentiary weight your conclusion needs to carry. Choose a systematic review when your question is well-defined and answerable -- "does intervention X improve outcome Y in population Z" -- and you have the timeline (typically 12-18 months) to run a full protocol-registered, dual-screened, risk-of-bias-assessed process. Reviews are frequently misclassified here: labeling a review "systematic" when it's actually scoping in everything but name is one of the more common reasons reviewers push back on methodology.

Rapid review: when a decision-maker needs an answer in weeks, not months

Choose a rapid review when a policy-maker, health system, or organization needs an evidence summary on a compressed timeline -- weeks rather than the 12-18 months a full systematic review takes. Rapid reviews adapt standard systematic review methodology by streamlining specific steps: single-reviewer screening with a second reviewer checking a sample, restricting to a smaller number of databases, or limiting to English-language studies.

The defensibility of a rapid review rests entirely on being explicit about which steps were streamlined and why -- an undisclosed shortcut looks like a methodological flaw, while a disclosed one is a reasonable, transparent trade-off for the timeline.

A systematic review held to systematic review standards, a scoping review held to scoping review standards, and a rapid review whose shortcuts are disclosed all read as methodologically sound to a peer reviewer. The same underlying work, mislabeled, reads as either overclaiming (calling a scoping review "systematic") or under-defended (an undisclosed rapid review presented as exhaustive).
