Dissertation Coaching & Editing
Chapter-by-chapter coaching and editing, from topic selection through defense prep, across every degree level.
Dissertation committees look for the same patterns across chapters, regardless of discipline: a clear problem statement, a literature review that argues for a genuine gap rather than just summarizing the field, methodology that actually matches the research questions, and findings that don’t overclaim what the data supports.
We coach and edit through every stage — topic selection, proposal, each individual chapter as you write it, and final submission and defense prep. Our consultants hold doctorates themselves and have supervised or examined dissertations across a range of fields and methodologies.
We do not write chapters or complete a dissertation on a client’s behalf. Every service below is feedback, coaching, and editing on your own writing and your own research.
Before you write a word
Topic Consulting
The hardest part of starting a dissertation is often not finding an interesting topic but finding a feasible one — narrow enough to complete within your program's timeline, original enough to clear a committee, and matched to data or access you can actually get. We help you work through that narrowing process, testing candidate topics against feasibility, originality, and your own genuine interest, since you'll be living with this topic for years.
Research Question Development
A dissertation question has to be specific enough to answer with a bounded study, but significant enough to justify years of work. We help you sharpen a broad interest into questions that are answerable with a real methodology, and defensible when a committee member asks why this question and why now.
Proposal Review
Your proposal is the document that gets you permission to start — and proposal committees tend to flag the same handful of issues: scope that's too ambitious, a methodology-question mismatch, or a literature review that doesn't clearly establish the gap you're filling. We review your proposal draft against exactly these failure points before you submit it.
Concept Paper Feedback
Many programs require a concept paper before a full proposal — a shorter document testing whether your topic and approach are viable before you invest in a full proposal. We give feedback on concept paper drafts with an eye toward what will actually need to hold up at the full-proposal stage.
Working through each chapter with you
Introduction & Problem Statement Coaching
Your introduction chapter has one job: convince a reader that your problem is real, significant, and not yet adequately addressed in the literature. We coach you through framing — is the significance argument actually supported by what you cite, does the problem statement lead logically into your research questions — on drafts you've written.
Literature Review Coaching
A dissertation-length literature review needs an organizing structure — thematic, chronological, methodological — that a reader can follow, and it needs to build toward your gap rather than just surveying the field. We coach you through structuring and synthesizing your review chapter, including how to handle conflicting findings and how to position your study within them.
Methodology Consulting
Your methodology chapter needs to do more than describe what you did — it needs to justify why your design, sample, and analysis plan are the right choices for your specific research questions. We consult on refining your design and analysis plan, and on writing the justification a methodologist on your committee will be evaluating closely.
Findings & Discussion Feedback
Presenting findings clearly and then discussing what they mean are two different skills, and dissertations often blur them — results sections that editorialize, or discussion sections that don't clearly connect back to the data. We give feedback on separating presentation from interpretation, and on keeping your discussion's claims proportionate to what your findings actually show.
Getting to a defensible final manuscript
Editing & Formatting
Your final manuscript needs to meet your institution's specific formatting requirements — margins, heading styles, table and figure formatting, front matter — on top of standard academic editing for grammar and clarity. We provide a full-manuscript pass covering both, since formatting errors are an unnecessary reason to get sent back at final review.
Citation & Reference Review
Across a dissertation-length document, citation errors compound — a source cited in-text but missing from your reference list, inconsistent formatting between chapters written months apart. We check your citations and references for accuracy and internal consistency across the full manuscript.
Defense Preparation Coaching
A successful defense usually comes down to anticipating what your committee will ask and having thought through your answers in advance, not memorizing a script. We coach you through likely questions based on your specific study's weak points, and help you practice delivering answers that are direct and confident rather than defensive.
Committee Response Coaching
Revise-and-resubmit requests after a defense or a chapter review need to be addressed thoroughly and diplomatically — committees are checking not just whether you made the changes, but whether you understood the underlying concern. We help you draft response documents that address each point clearly and demonstrate genuine engagement with the feedback.
